Algonquin Land Claim Impact within the Greater KAPOA Area

There are 9 parcels of land adjacent to Kamaniskeg Lake, Bark Lake, Spectacle Lake and Negeek Lake that are proposed to be transferred as part of the Land Claim Agreement including Bell Bay non-operating provincial park.

The high-level proposed use for each of the land claim parcels was identified early in the negotiation process. Actual use of the land will depend on many factors including feasibility and environmental studies. The Algonquin will need to refine the proposed use. Zoning will be determined after the Land Claim agreement has been signed.

  • Parcel 60B – Kamaniskeg – “commercial redevelopment of ski hill with residential complex at water; potentially a high priority”; note that environmental and zoning and feasibility studies will need to be done in advance of development, just like the planning process that was undertaken when Calabogie Peaks was developed

KAPOA has spoken and corresponded with Madawaska Valley and the municipality has contacted the negotiating team regarding the impact on the Thomas P Murray recreational trails. The negotiating team is waiting for further information from the Ministry of Natural Resources. KAPOA will be submitting maps and trail information to the negotiating team to clarify the location of the impacted trails.

Local municipalities met on April 6 2013 and South Algonquin, Hagarty and Richards, Lanark Highlands, North Frontenac, Hastings Highlands, East Ferris, North Kawartha, Addington Highlands and North Algona Wilberforce, and Laurentian Hill are calling for municipal representation at the negotiating table to provide “input towards fair & workable treaties for the respective benefits of both native and non-natives of the municipalities across Ontario.”
