Regatta Highlights
First of all, another great regatta! The weather was chilly, but the rain didn’t last long and the events were exciting as expected! There were a number of exciting canoe outcomes (we’ll be discussing disqualification criteria for next year, rest assured!!), and the tug-of-war had both controversy and drama! You can’t ask for more than that for a day at the beach!

The volunteers again made the event, including the usual suspects & a lot of new helpers (Eva & Bob for 50/50, Catherine on the ribbons table, Al helping with setup, and several volunteers off the beach to help with finish line.) I hope I have not missed recognizing anyone, as I do appreciate your help and smiles and support! Nephew Maverick was awesome on the dock with Sean, as well as with tug-of-war, despite the small issue of swatting a fly just when one team was near to completing their pull! The re-pull was the only solution to that misunderstanding, thus the controversy!! I can’t thank our volunteers, new and old, for all of the help on event day!
We had smaller swimming participation this year, not sure if it was the weather (chilly, and water was colder than the seasonal expectation) or just demographics. But we made the most of it, and our swimming trophy winners were as follows:
- Best Male Swimmer – Iax Cox
- Best Female Swimmer – a 3 way tie due to clear winners across all 3 age categories!
- Lindsay Cox – 10 and under
- Sarah Hansen – 11-14 years
- Kalli Buchanan – 15 + age category
The sailing race finished earlier this year due to an earlier start, and a fast course. Bill Cahoon was very excited to be able to declare a younger participant as winner this year. Arie Moffat was our Best Sailing Competitor, and though a bashful recipient, I know he was pleased with his race and his win. Congratulations Arie, and I hope we see you out next year to defend your title!
The canoe races, as mentioned, were eventful with lots of tips, several sly tactics, and lots of laughs. Canoe and swim results combined provided the day with a Best Overall Competitor of Brad Beecroft. Congratulations Brad!
Our sand castle certificate recipients, and the 50/50 winner of $160, John Dolenc, all went home happy. John said it was the best day at the beach he’d experienced in a long time!
Lastly, the Tug-of-War competition was exciting and controversial, but KAPOA organizers worked harder this year to ensure that it was fair & organized, and I think we succeeded. The signup sheets ensured that teams were all lined up before the start of pulls, and there was no last minute scrambling. Congratulations to Team Barry’s Bay for toppling long time winners, the Pyz-Lagerquist family, that is an enviable feat, not often accomplished! I hope to see this level of competition again next year, as all team’s look to topple the new winner from their perch!
Junior winners –
- 1st place- Team Planica
- 2nd place – Team Lightening
- 3rd place – Team Pickerel
Senior winners –
- 1st place- Team Barry’s Bay
- Runner’s Up – The Champions & Pyz-Lagerquist Family (last year’s champs)
Lastly, the event success is dependent on the help of our sponsors, the Pyz family for the hotdogs which we heard more than once were the best ever, Sand Bay camp for the ice, & Cathy Pitts Realty & Home Hardware for sponsoring the events expenses like ribbons, trophy plates, medals and drinks. Thank you to all for the contributions, we always appreciate your support!
I hope to see everyone and more out again next year!!
