Happy Summer fellow KAPOAns

As we approach the end of July, we have to say that summer has finally arrived, notwithstanding that the weather bounces from hot one day to cold and/or rainy the next.

So much is happening in the next while that we wanted to send you this reminder of upcoming events.

2014 Annual Poker Run

The Poker Run kicks off this weekend starting with registration at the Barry’s Bay dock Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.  Then at Hinterland Beach at 2:00 p.m. for BBQ, entertainment, 50:50 draw; group photograph, and the big cheque presentation.

Boats will pick up seven cards at various docks shown on the map, resulting in a five card poker hand. There are five prizes for the best five card pokers hands.  If all the committed folks participate, then we have met our 40 boat goal for 2014 but we should be able to squeeze you in if you show up with a $200 donation to the SFMH Foundation.

All donations are entirely directed 100% to the foundation’s new digital mammography unit as part of our ‘Think Pink’ campaign.  It looks like we will be able to increase our $6,000 contribution last year to $8,000 this year, which all helps to ensure we keep our  local hospital viable and open during these government reductions and closures.

KAPOA Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The KAPOA Annual General Meeting (AGM) is also this weekend Sunday morning at the Madawaska Mountain Ski facility.  Registration begins at 8:45 for 9:00 start and ends at noon.  This is an election year so this AGM will present candidates for councillors and mayors for both Hastings Highlands and Madawaska Valley alike.  The Council from neither municipality has distinguished themselves as they attempted without total success to deal with the issues of the day.

Please come join us at the AGM to form your own opinion about each candidate as they provide a three minute (maximum) presentation to explain why we should vote for them.  It is clear that previous councils in both municipalities have not been serving cottagers and property owners well even though waterfronters pay over 80% of property taxes.  In camera (confidential & illegal) meetings and closed committees (with no representation from the public) were prevalent in both municipalities.  We do hope for a change.  Please come see for yourself?

KAPOA Regatta

The KAPOA Regatta starts at noon at Hinterland Beach Saturday August 2, so bring the kids, and come enjoy.  Sailing starts at 11:00.

More information and pictures from last year on the web site.

Appetizer Lake Party

The Appetizer Lake Party is scheduled for Saturday Aug 9 after 2:00 at the home of Lynne & Duncan Maclean at 69 Lewis Lane off River Road.  Pot luck & bring your own, plus chairs.

Broadscale Fish Inventory

MNR will be commencing their Broadscale Fish Inventory program over a two week period later in August so please alert everybody so they don’t disturb or interfere with the many nets that will be located throughout our area.

Newsletter Subscriptions

The new Canadian Anti Spam Law (CASL) officially started July 1, 2014 and the last newsletter included an ‘opt in’ button/link and we plan to continue incorporating these inconveniences to ensure we comply.  So if you have not done so already, please resubscribe by following the subscribe link from the web site at www.kapoa.ca.

Testing Well Water

Ontario Health Units recommend testing well water more than once each year.  The Barry’s Bay branch of the Ontario Health Unit has closed.  Lorraine’s PharmaSave in Barry’s Bay, has generously stepped in to fill the gap.  There is a bin near the front door where you can pick up water sample bottles and then return completed water samples to the store to be shipped to the Health Unit to be tested.

Voter Lookup

KAPOA will enthusiastically encourage you, your family, and all your neighbours who own property in the municipality to vote in the upcoming municipal election this October.  To ensure that you will be mailed your ballot package to be able to mail in your vote, you  need to do two things.   Firstly, you should check that you are on the voter list by going to web site voterlookup.ca.  Secondly, you should contact the municipal office after mid September to confirm they have your correct mailing address on the voter list.  Just having the correct address for your property tax bill is not any proof.  Please check the FAQ for more info.

All Candidates Open House

The Family Health Organization is sponsoring an All Candidates Open House on Tuesday, August 26th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Opeongo Seniors Centre in Barry’s Bay.
