Annual Meeting
The 2003 KAPOA Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday May 17 at the Opeongo Seniors Centre at 10:00 AM. This is a new time for the meeting, as it has usually been held in the early evening on iether Victoria Day or the Canada Day weekend. The number of members attending has dwindled over the years and board thought that we should try a new time to see if we could raise the attendance at the meeting. Please mark the date on your calendar and try to attend.
Reeves have been invited back to report to the membership.
Brian Johnston has agreed to run the Elections of New Board Members at this years meeting, anyone interested in assisting our association board should contact Brian his contact information is in the Board Of Directors Listing.
FOCA Update
After 15 years the four-page newsletter FOCA News will no longer appear in the Cottage Life magazine it has moved to your computer. In January they shifted from print to electronic publishing so they can bring you the news as it happens. To learn the latest in cottaging, visit their website at www.foca.on.ca.
The FOCA Annual General Meeting Fall Seminar will be held on November 8, 2003.
Another date of interest to Cottagers is the Annual Cottage Life Show March 28-30, 2003 at the International Centre Airport and Derry Road, Toronto.
Operator Competency Program
On April 1, 1999 new boating regulationg were first introduced into law. The first phase required everyone born after April 1, 1983 needed an Operator Competency Card. The second phase came into effect on September 15, 2002. This second phase means that anyone of any age operating a boat (with any motor) less than 4 meters (13′ 1″) in length now requires an Operator Competency Card. So while you do not need a card to operate your 18-foot inboard/outboard, you DO need a card to operate the 12′ 9.9 hp runabout.
Hydro bills have been well documented in the news media. Of particular interest to cottagers is a promised independent review of all the monopoly charges including the Fixed Monthly Charge. You will know that cottagers were the first group of customers to be slapped with this fixed charge years ago. FOCA members do not like the fixed charge, which is now 75% of the average hydro bill. FOCA said so in their presentation to the OEB in 1999 but despite the warning, OEB went ahead and approved it for all customers anyway, The last chapter in the hydro Story has not been written yet so Stay tuned.
Road Safety
During the summer months cottagers have visitors who not familiar with walking on our country roads. Many visitors tend to walk three or four abreast on hills and curves. Cars have to drive in the oncoming lane when passing the visitors. This positions everyone in danger. We would like to ask all the cottagers to please advise visitors to form a narrow line when cars approach and this should allow all vehicles to maintain their driving lane and avoid any accidents.
