Get your Pleasure Craft Operators Card. As of September 15, 2009, it was the law. Consequences of getting caught without the card include a minimum $250 fine. Expectations are that spring 2010 will mark a significant increase in the number of fines being issued.
It is estimated that 8 million Canadians still need “The Card”.
Getting the card is straightforward. You simply need to obtain a mark of 75% on a Transport Canada accredited exam. Cottagers who rent out their properties, and specifically those who may include a boat as part of the rental, should be aware that they must now require renters to complete a “Rental Boat Safety Checklist” or show proof of compentency before heading out on the water.
